The White House Inn Officially Turns Green The White House Inn has recently become a member of the Green Hotels Association. "Green" hotels are environmentally-friendly properties whose managers are eager to institute programs that save water, save energy and reduce solid waste, and save money-- in the interest of protecting our earth and environment. While the owners of the White House Inn have been actively engaged in recycling for over ten years, the decision to increase our efforts brings our commitment to a higher level of awareness. We will be taking measures to, on a daily basis, save water, energy and to reduce solid waste. Further, we will begin cleaning exclusively with products which have been proven to be environmentally safe. At The White House we have been asking our guests to consider using towels and bed linens more than once. This, of course, is a choice. Research has found that making this choice, however, may save up to 5% of utility costs per year. Determined to integrate as many as possible of the best practices for operating a green business in Vermont, innkeeper Adam Grinold has sought out local partnerships to assist in this goal. The inn has partnered with Windham County Solid Waste Management andTriple Tee Trucking for a composting program called Project COW: commercial organic waste composting. The white house is helping our waste district meet its recycling goal of 50% by diverting food and paper waste into compost. About a ton of organic waste is collected each week from local businesses which is then transported to Martin Farm in Greenfield, MA, where it is composted and turned into a beneficial soil amendment, available to the public. The White House of Wilmington is located in the Mount Snow Valley of Southern Vermont and is 4-season country inn and restaurant. Each of the inn’s 25 guest rooms is individually decorated, with many having wood-burning fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. The inn’s restaurant has been serving award-wining meals for the last 30 years. Most recently the restaurant was awarded Wine Spectator Magazine’s Award of Excellence.
